Launched in 2005, the EMP (Master de spécialisation en microfinance) has been designed by microfinance experts to offer a unique blend of theory and practice. Since 2007, students graduating from the EMP obtain a full Master degree (European Master in microfinance).
The purpose of the programme is to develop future professionals in microfinance who will contribute to the strengthening of microfinance institutions worldwide, in accordance with the highest international standards.
The EMP provides students with a professional, multi-disciplinary approach to the challenges the microfinance sector is facing today, through:
- a solid theoretical foundation, taught by professors from three European universities in Belgium (Université libre de Bruxelles; Université de Mons) and France (Université Paris Dauphine);
- insights into the latest techniques used by international microfinance institutions, provided by practitioners from the NGO partners ADA, BRS, CERISE and SOS Faim;
- opportunities to participate in seminars and conferences addressed to microfinance experts;
- a compulsory two-to-fourth-month internship in a developing country to obtain the necessary knowledge of daily realities of micro-finance on the field.
With more than 68% of students coming from the South, 17 nationalities and experts from all parts of the world, the EMP is a particularly international Masters programme, which allows to create and keep new (professional) networks.

Main objectives pursued by the European Microfinance Programme:
- to create a pool of highly qualified microfinance professionals who will ensure the future development of microfinance institutions worldwide;
- to train future professionals from both the North and the South, through a multidisciplinary academic approach;
- to analyse and rationalise the different perspectives on development issues in the microfinance sector.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates applying to your EMP via the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Master Complémentaire Conjoint en Micro-Finance ), should see the General Information document HERE.
The following requirements must be met by all candidates:
ACADEMIC DEGREE:
Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in one of the following fields: development cooperation, economics, agronomy, management, or finance, equivalent to 300 ECTS (five years) from a recognized academic institution. Other qualifications may be recognized on a case-by-case basis. Academic achievement, suitable work experience, and field experience in underdeveloped nations are all highly valued.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH:
Fluency in English is necessary. Candidates must demonstrate their spoken and written English proficiency because the EMP is taught in English.
The following credentials are recognised as proof of English proficiency:
No proof is required for native speakers (USA, UK, AUS, NZL, IRL, CAN (Engl)).
Applicants from anglophone countries must submit certification from their university that they finished their studies in English.
All other contenders:
– TOEFL: 550 on paper, 213 on computer, and 79-80 on the internet
– IELTS: a minimum score of 6.5 is required.
– Cambridge First Certificate (FCE): a grade of C or higher is required.
– CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): pass with a grade of C or above Participating Institution (s)
Professors from three European universities teach the EMP in:
Université libre de Bruxelles (Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management) and Université de Mons (Warocqué), both of which are part of the Académie Universitaire Wallonie-Bruxelles, and Université Paris Dauphine, both in France.
Experts from international microfinance NGOs such as ADA, BRS, CERISE, PlaNet Finance, and SOS Faim were also present. With their plethora of knowledge in training, information management, and technical help to the microfinance sector, NGOs round out the scholarly perspective. These NGOs are in charge of managing the internship component of the curriculum, in addition to presenting guest lecturers on a variety of themes.
How to Apply for Microfinance Scholarships for Developing Countries 2020-2021
All applicants must complete out and submit an EMP Application form, either online or by downloading and filling it out and sending it to us by email. If the EMP Jury has pre-selected a candidate, the candidate will be asked to continue the application process by submitting additional papers. Also, keep in mind that you must apply for CCD Scholarships.
