Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has said that much as the main building fire is a tragedy, the University will recover from the ruins with the same pride and prestige.
Prof. Nawangwe describes the fire as a “loss but not a disaster”. He has based this on the fact that Makerere has kept most of its records in digitized form.
He has confirmed that the fire has destroyed the department of the human resource, Audit and finance and most of the records perished.
The Vice Chancellor promises that as Makerere awaits to mark 100 years of existence in the next one year, the main build should be standing again.
According to Prof. Nawangwe, the whole world is concerned and grieving as the building held some sense of pride as pillar of academic excellence even to the people who did not study from the University.
“I have had many phone calls even from the president and I think he will come or send a representative anytime soon,
When I received information about the fire at around midnight, someone had already posted on social media a photo of the main building on fire!” Prof. Nawangwe emphasized the value the building hold to the community.
However, the cause of fire is yet to be determined as investigations into the matter are still ongoing. By press time, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was making his way to witness the ruins of the prestigious main building
More details, especially from the presidential visit to the building to unravel.
