Tea is one of Uganda’s biggest exports, it’s commonly grown in the western part of Uganda Kisoro, Kabarole and Kyenjojo. So many people are earning millions from growing tea. Here are a few facts to note before growing tea.

  1. Tea can only grow well in places of high altitude with a moderate climate throughout the whole year.
  2. You need to consider three things climate, soil acidity, and labor because they are the key factors.
  3. Suitable climate with a minimum annual rainfall of 45 to 50 equivalent to 1,140 to 1,270 mm, which is equally distributed, is required.
  4. In case it’s a cool season, with average temperature of 11 ° or below this, it will affect the growth rate hence decrease the yields.
  5. The required soil pH is 5.8 to 5.4 or slightly less than this.
  6. Pruning is very important and this is done in two ways that is to either prune the immature plant or the mature plant.
  7. Pruning is so important that it helps in the vertical and horizontal growth.
  8. To get quality tea, it is vital that a farmer plucks only the second and the third leaves with their bud.
  9. Every year, Uganda earns about US$90-100 million and tea is marked as Uganda’s biggest traditional export. This industry employs about 62,000 people.
